Reddit Sues Anthropic Over Alleged Unauthorized Data Scraping for AI Training
Reddit has filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, accusing the AI firm of scraping its platform without permission to train the Claude AI model. The complaint, lodged in a U.S. federal court, claims Anthropic violated Reddit's user agreement and accessed its servers over 100,000 times after publicly stating it had stopped such activity in July 2024.
The social media giant seeks damages, restitution, and an injunction to block Anthropic from using Reddit-derived data in its products. Reddit alleges Anthropic presented a 'two-faced' image—publicly advocating for ethical AI practices while privately engaging in unauthorized data harvesting.
This legal action adds to mounting scrutiny over AI companies' data acquisition methods, echoing broader industry debates about intellectual property and fair use in machine learning.
